We live in a temperate rain forest where humidity and temperatures are in the
'Goldie Lock Zone' for molds to thrive.
Unprotected wood products that are exposed to outside Temperatures & Humidity are vulnerable to becoming moldy. Recent Provincial building studies have shown that even well built houses with well ventilated attics are increasingly becoming moldy.
These are homes that are built to our regional building codes by
good, conscientious & professional builders.
I encourage contractors, developers, architects & homeowners to read the science.
Because preventing this is far smarter then remediating it.

Formaldehydes have been used in the glues & binders of Manufactured Wood Products, like plywood, OSB, & MDF for decades. It gave the glues & binders better performance & helped keep molds from developing. In 1999 Health Canada determined Formaldehydes to be a toxic substance & began legislation to reduce & eventually eliminate it from MWP. Today's MWP are vulnerable to molds under the right conditions. The same conditions of Vancouver Island's Marine Environment.

It takes time & foresight building multimillion dollar homes, sometimes a year or two, occasionally even longer. This means lumber that is exposed to moisture & high humidity will become moldy, especially in crawlspaces & basements. The builders & architects of these projects know this. They also know it is smarter to prevent mold then it is to remediate it.
It's cheaper, safer, & more professional.
